Weingut Andert
is located
in the Neusiedlersee winegrowing Area of
Austria. "See" means "lake" in German. The shallow Lake Neusiedl plays an influential role regulating the
microclimate of this area. It is a bit warmer here than near
Vienna and the lake creates ideal conditions for the
development of noble rot which is the condition necessary
for the sweet wines made here.
But not only is
this microclimate ideal for sweet wines, it also drives the
development of powerful red and white table wines. As Josef
Andert puts it, "There is no other region in the world
where you can simultaneously produce fruity white wines,
robust red wines and outstanding sweet wines." And
the results are in! This talented winemaker is able to
produce astonishing wines in all three categories!

My
Tasting Notes of 4 Andert Wines (Toronto, April 22,
2009): |

Gewürztraminer Fuchsloch (Fox hole) 2008 (750 ml)
Light gold in appearance, with delicate aromas of rose petal and lychee.
An elegant presentation of tropical fruit and pear
with the perfect balance of acidity, light toasty
vanilla and slight creaminess. Nice mouthfeel with a
lingering finish that entices you for more.
Can cellar for 5 years. Fermented
and stored in oak barrels for 3 months then
transferred to stainless steel tanks. These vines
are grown in gravel.

St.

This dark ruby red beauty is barrel aged for 12 months. Deep violet in
colour, with a nose of vanilla and a hint of
earthiness and tar. Very smooth and well integrated
with rich fruit, spice and dark berries. The varietal
belongs to the Burgunder family. This wine displays
elegance and superb balance. A world class red
wine. Cellar-worthy for up to 15 years.
Alc. 13 % vol.,
Residual sugar = 1 Gram/Litre, Acidity = 4.5

Gelber Muskateller Beerenauslese 2007 (375 ml)
Honeyed apricots with the most perfect mix of sweetness and acidity
possible.
Gorgeous balance and complexity. This is the
most faultless dessert wine I've had in years. A very fruity and fine
sweet wine, fermented in tanks and aged 12 month in barrique barrels. The “wood” from the barrels
harmonizes well with the wine and in the mouth you
can identify the roasty aromas from the barrique.
The vines are planted in loam.
Est. Retail:
$25.95 in Ontario.

Gewürztraminer Trockenbeerenauslese 2008 (750
ml)
A botrytis affected, full sweet wine.
Fermented in steel and aged 8 months in barrique.
Enticing earthy tones with honey roasted nuts. The
wood is well integrated in the wine and the nose
captures the roasty aromas of the barrels. TBAs are,
at harvest, raisin-like, through the Botrytis cinerea.
This wine will cellar for 20 years plus. Grown in
heavy loam soil.
Est. Retail: $38.95 in
Ontario. |
