Wine Notebook, Part 2 (November 16, 2006)    by the Wine Baron
Hugh, Lynne and I arrived in Margaux today, staying at Le Pavillon de Margaux.  After getting settled in, we visited Château Marojallia, which has a business connection with the Pavillon. We were checking into the possibility of leading wine tours here. They gave us a tour of the Château and the various luxury rooms and suites.  And of course we tasted the wines. Both the facility and its wines are spectacular.

Marojallia is located in Margaux, just a 4 or 5 minute walk from ultra-famous Château Margaux.

Marojallia, which means Margaux in Latin, started producing the first "Garage Wines" in the Médoc. Painstaking and loving care of the winemaking process is given on a small, personal level, and the production equipment can literally fit in a garage.

Their first wine, "Marojallia," is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot. This is one of the finest wines in Margaux.  It peals with richness, elegance and firm tannins yet softness and balance. The wine is fruity, with vanilla and blackcurrant flavours and a hint of liquorice. A long and satisfying finish further underscores the greatness of this wine. Its concentration firmly establishes it as a power wine... to be acquired at all costs!  Wow.

Clos Margalaine is their second wine. It's like a younger sister of the mighty Marojallia. It is faithful to its elder counterpart with most of the character described above. An affordable alternative.

These wines are raved about by Robert Parker and we heartily agree with his informed assessment.

The Château is owned by Phillipe Porcheron, who founded the facility in 1999. He has been the winemaker since 2001 and draws upon the expertise of consulting oenologist Michel Rolland.

I personally consider the Margaux appellation to be the Holy Grail of wine regions. Whether it is wine from Château Margaux, Château Rauzan-Ségla, Château Rauzan-Gassies, Château Durfort-Vivens, or Château Lascombes, I always feel I'm in the presence of greatness. Château Marojallia lives up to the greatness that is Margaux.
