Wine
Notebook, Part 21 (June 18, 2007)
by the Wine Baron
I stopped
in at Langdon Hall in Cambridge today. This upscale Inn
and fine dining establishment is located in a
Carolinian-forested area near the small Ontario
city. I have enjoyed many fine wines on their list
in the past. Although I just stopped in for an
espresso today, I enjoyed hearing about an amazing
Single Malt Scotch they acquired recently. Dun
Bheagan Little Mill is a 21 year old lowland Scotch
that is finished in Sherry barrels. I look forward to
trying it next time I dine there some evening.
One of
the finest wines on the Langdon Hall menu is the Valdevieso
Single Vineyard Malbec. The winery was voted one of the top six in the
world ... The malbec grape got its origins in Bordeaux, where is was used for blending, and South West France where it produces big dark long lasting tannic wines. It has transplanted beautifully to Chile where it is now a mainstay of single varietal
wines. The colour is a deep Garnet and the nose is reminiscent of outdoors and red fruit. Persistent but laid back tannins. Forward fruit structure and finish. Will age well. Light tannic notes with a hint of chocolate and leather.
Mind blowing big flavours and structure that equals or betters any
Cabernet.
