Notebook, Part 23 (July 17, 2007)

I had
lunch with world class sommelier Zoltan Szabo and food
consultant Michael Pataran today. The venue was the
delightful Sette Mezzo on Eglinton Avenue W in Toronto
(see links below).
When three people who love food, wine, travel and
culture this passionately, spend a couple of hours
together, it can only be described as good times.
We jumped headlong into
an antipasti platter of grilled black tiger shrimp,
portobello mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, sausage, roast
pork and other delectables. And here are the stunning
wines we had. Tasting notes by Mr. Szabo:

2006 Semi-Dry
Riesling, De Sousa, Niagara, ON
Pale with a light cerignola olive tint. Lemon -
lime, stone fruit, calla lilies and water stone
scents with a backdrop of ruby grapefruit pulp.
Light bodied with well-balanced sweetness and a
soft peachy
finish. Rating: 3½ out of 5.
2006 Gewurztraminer, De Sousa,
Niagara, ON
Light straw with a copper tinge
appearance. Pure and delicate nose with exotic
fruit and aromatic wild flowers. Very pleasant
with lingering rosewater flavours. Rating: 3½
out of 5.
2004 Sainte Croix du Mont, Château
Montaunoir, Bordeaux, FRANCE
Light and bright gold in colour with plenty of
viscosity. Stonefruit, honey, cantaloupe, kiwi,
tangerine and beeswax on the bouquet. Pineapple
- mango flavours with non-cloyed sweetness,
great acidity and almost dry finish. Roasted
tenderloin of pork with mango, coconut - Thai
chile chutney, lime leaf braised celery root.
Rating: 4 stars out of 5.
2003 Sainte Croix du Mont, Château de
Vertheuil, Bordeaux, FRANCE
Barrel fermented and oak-aged for twelve months.
Insipid gold colour with Asian Ma pear, licorice
root and spicy honey floral nuances. Rich and
flavoursome with underlying cedar/oak spice and
ripe banana custard finish. White chocolate - mango bavarois
with coconut crème
anglaise. Rating: 4½
out of 5. |
