Wine Notebook, Part 28 (September 4, 2007)    by the Wine Baron

Visited Angel's Gate Winery today. Located in Beamsville, Ontario, this Niagara Peninsula winery is situated in beautifully sloping vineyards on the Niagara Escarpment, a World Biosphere protected cliff that runs for hundreds of miles north.

The winery offers Terrace Lunch on the patio from Wednesday to Sunday,  11 AM to 4 PM as long as the weather holds (usually from May to October). The views down the vineyard slopes to Lake Ontario and across the lake to Toronto in the distance are spectacular. The building itself is very attractive. This is an excellent place to visit. Take a tour, try wines at the tasting bar, and enjoy lunch in season. They of course sell all their wines in the onsite boutique. And you can order by phone or online at their website.

The white, red and specialty wine portfolio is extensive and consistently very good. I particularly enjoyed these wines today:

Angels Gate Winery Riesling Sussreserve 2006 (ONTARIO - VQA)
This dynamic wine pleases the palate. It is a very enticing Riesling that has been naturally sweetened with unfermented Riesling juice the day before bottling. A novel idea!  This adds complexity and texture to the wine. All the traditional Riesling characteristics are here, such as citrus, floral and minerals, but with additional zest and finesse.  A crowd pleaser. CDN $13.95  (SC: 2)

Angels Gate Winery Snow Angel Late Harvest Cabernet 2006 (ONTARIO - VQA)
This is really quite a stunning wine!  It packs an impact similar to Icewine or Sauternes - not in their extreme sweetness, but in their truly rich and interesting qualities.  Who else makes such a wine?  It's a Cabernet dessert wine for goodness sakes!  Cool stuff.  Luscious aromas and flavors of candy apple, strawberry jelly and cherry pie present themselves with distinction and subtlety. Its ultra-smooth texture and balance make it a serious wine.  I can imagine it with ripe soft blue cheeses like Gorgonzola and Camembert, with pate and fresh French stick, thinly sliced.  About CDN $23.00  (SC: 5)
