Wine Notebook, Part 32 (November 14, 2007)
by the Wine Baron
I visited
Creekside Estate Winery in the
Niagara Peninsula today. The winery has become a
powerful Canadian force for a number of reasons:
First, they make great
wines. Winemakers Rob Power and Craig McDonald
produce well crafted wines that are highly esteemed.
Second, Creekside owners Peter
Jensen and Laura McCain-Jensen have built up a family of
wineries that include Creekside, Mike Weir Estate Winery
and Wayne Gretzky Estates. Each among the family
of wineries produces truly superb
wines. Third,
they are a
great place to visit. Take a wine tour and stay
overnight in a local B&B (there are hundreds
in the area). Note, the Gretzky winery
is still to be built, so you can't
visit yet, but the other two are
waiting for you to drop by. In the meantime, Rob
Power makes all Gretzky's wines at Creekside,
which is another cool reason to visit. So this leads to a question: Have you taken a
tour of a winery lately? If you haven't, you're missing
a truly cultural, educational and fun activity. You'll
learn how wine is made, how to taste wine like an expert
and get to sample some of the wines right on the
premises. Not to be missed! Niagara Peninsula is
just 1 hour from Toronto, and 40 minutes from
Buffalo.

The
Wine today:
Creekside
Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2006- (Niagara Peninsula)
I
enjoyed the complexity and finesse of
this Sauvignon Blanc. Aromas of
gooseberry, apricot, lemon rind and vanilla lead to
a palate that is creamy and full with
flavors of melon, nectarines, vanilla, and
gooseberry. This balanced wine is delicate
with lovely structure. Excellent length. A truly
fine New World Sauvignon that does not hail from New
Zealand.
