Wine Notebook, Part 39 (March 7, 2008)
by the Wine Baron
I picked
up wine in Toronto. While near the wine warehouse, I stopped
in on the Queen's Quay LCBO store and spoke to Borys in
Vintages about Austrian wines. He recommended a Grϋner
Veltliner. Then to Bronte for a chiropractic adjustment.
While in Bronte, I decided to stop in on Denningers Deli
to pick up some Wieners, Leberkaese, Sauerkraut and
Kaiser buns.
The food
was quick and easy to prepare at home. We sat down to enjoy the
hearty German fare with the Grϋner
Veltliner. Wow! I have had this Austrian varietal a
number of times in the past, but maybe I wasn't mentally
ready to accord it proper respect. This is indeed a
world-class wine. More below...
Wine: Weingut Stadt Krems 2006, Wachtberg -
Grϋner
Veltliner is Austria's own varietal. In an anonymous
tasting by International wine experts in the Fall of
2002, this wine got the top scores against the top
chardonnays of the world. The varietal has since become
a cult wine in the finest restaurants in such dining
capitals as New York City. It is
now essential for any serious restaurant to have a Grϋner Veltliner on its wine list.
The Stadt
Krems Grϋner Veltliner is finely crafted. The key
words here are: sophisticated and balanced. It has a
beautiful nose of pear, vanilla and a hint of butter.
The flavors bear similar characteristics with a nice
complement of tropical fruit and minerality. It is dry, fruity,
and
refreshingly different. And it's got class! I've become
a new fan.
