Wine Notebook, Part 40 (April 2, 2008)
by the Wine Baron
Being a
thirsty lot, we had special-ordered some wines that the
Wine and Leisure tasting panel was anxious to try. I had
tasted these three wines in Bordeaux a short while back
and now I wanted the team to try them as well. They're
from Vignobles Ricard. This Bordeaux winery
produces 3 Château brands:
Château de Vertheuil,
Château Montaunoir,
and
Château
Grand Picque-Caillou. They are exported to a few European
countries and now our Agency carries these fine wines
for the Ontario Canada market.
Vignobles Ricard is a 28
hectare family owned estate in Sainte Croix du Mont.
It is 45 kilometers S/W of the city of Bordeaux on
the hillside overlooking the famous Garonne River.
Philippe Durand makes the wine and his wife
Genevieve Ricard looks after administrative duties
and marketing.
This charming chateau produces wines with fruity
flavors and aromas. Their wine-making passion
clearly shows as you savor the product of their
labor.
So,
the assembled team set about tasting the wines I had
raved about since my return from France. The team
was very impressed with their Bordeaux Red and
White. And of course we'd already tried their
stunning sweet Sauternes-style wine previously. See
blogs about their Sainte Croix du Mont

Chateau Grand Picque-Caillou - Bordeaux Rouge, 2005 -
This
charmer turned out to be both complex and easy-drinking.
It started showing its personality with fruity and
subtle spicy aromas. A very nice nose. It presents
itself as a light wine (but not too light) with earthy
nuances, black and red berries, subtle cherries and
raisins. The aromas of red and black berries follow
through in the flavor. Nice level of tannins. They're
there to make the wine big, but they're in check. This
wine is ready to drink now and will mature amiably in
the cellar over several years. Smooth finish. It's a
big, round wine. Delicate, lively and easy to enjoy. 60%
cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc, 30% merlot. Not
oak-aged.
RATING: 8+.
In the low $20's.
An awesome Sauvignon

Chateau
Montaunoir - Bordeaux Blanc, 2007 -
A blend
of mostly sauvignon blanc with muscadelle and semillon
in smaller proportions. This
Bordeaux white charmed the socks off us. Some of us
weren't even wearing socks. All the buzz about New
Zealand sauvignons has gotten a bit old hat. Too
much "gooseberry," etc. We prefer a good sauvignon
from its original home, Bordeaux. And it's
blended with a touch of semillon to add further
complexity and balance. The color is a delicate
silvery gold. Aromas of tropical fruit and soft
fruit give way to a fresh-tasting wine with tropical
fruit and a hint of grapefruit rind. The wine has a
delicate buttery mouth-feel. The finish is smooth
and with finesse. This is an elegant and enticing
white wine. Wow.

9.
