Wine Notebook, Part 52 (November 4, 2008)
by the Wine Baron
I took
the Baroness out for dinner tonight. She sure is looking
younger every year. Yeah, you guessed it - it's her
birthday. We often traverse the Queen Elizabeth Way
towards Burlington for such outings, but alas, Grimsby
has a wonderful restaurant too (only one that fits this
category). 13 Mountain
Street is a friendly, cozy, upscale restaurant. Chef
Joshua Groom has made a name for himself in the
community as a fine baker and and excellent cook.
We were
greeted by a witty and charming waitress who attended to
our wishes each step of the way. We started off with a
fresh and enticing Antipasto Platter with olives,
artichokes, gherkins and various Niagara food
specialties. We both chose red meat dishes. The
highlight was the "Rack and Roll," a medley of West
Indian roast Ontario rack of Lamb along with a braised
Lamb shank. The meat was accompanied by Indian raison
honey spiced rice, mint yogurt and carmelized leek, and
a Popadum pastry with curry oil. A Tandoori smear glazed
its way across the amazing rectangular plate.
The Wine
Tawse Echo's Red Bistro
If I recall correctly, this was a blend of Syrah and
Merlot, which is an interesting combination. The wine
was dark in colour, very big in taste. A gorgeous and
serious wine with a nose of red and black fruit and
cigar box. Elegant layers of blackberries and vanilla
with peppery spice. An excellent Ontario wine.
