Blog Note 59 (January 23, 2009)    by the Wine Baron

Sales manager Larry Horne of Calamus Estate Winery had invited me to visit a while back (not covered in my blog). I tasted an assortment of their wines and found them to be very good. Virtually all of them are fine examples of their varietal. There were a few notables that I could go on about because they're so nice. And affordable.

So, it was time to revisit a bottle of Calamus. I recalled the absolute charm of their Riesling. This evening the Baroness and English Student joined me in enjoying this wine with our Friday evening meal. We always try to make it a fun evening, with good food, wine and entertainment of some sort.

Calamus Riesling 2007 VQA
This semi-dry wine is elegant, charming and brimming with interesting character. Many good Rieslings are quite nice, but offer nothing really noteworthy. The Calamus Riesling delivers personality. It allures with fascinating mineral notes that interplay with aromas and flavours of peaches, apples, grapefruit and other tropical fruit, with a hint of honey. There's also a floral quality that pulls you into its magnetic charm. It would usually take a fine Austrian Riesling to captivate with this level of interesting complexity and mineral notes. Well done, Derek Saunders and Arthur Harder. I'd easily rate this a

It is great to learn of a new winery that has well crafted wines at affordable prices.
