Blog Note 64 (February 22, 23 and 24th, 2009)    by the Wine Baron

The Baroness, youngest daughter and I drove down to Boston yesterday. The drive took 9 1/2 hours from Grimsby, but we took a wrong turn. We should be able to do it in 8 1/2 hours next time. The hike through the Berkshires was very nice, even though it was dark by this point. We checked into a hotel near the JFK Library and then headed back out again to the Black Rose Tavern, downtown.  The band was excellent. The Guinness was no where near similar to the version of the brew we had in Ireland just a few short weeks ago. But the overall experience was lovely. This is only going to be a two night trip, so we plan out our Monday before heading to bed.

Next morning we visited our wish list. The Paul Revere House, USS Constitution, Bunker Hill, Faneuil Hall, and the Bull & Finch, aka Cheers Pub,  on 64 Beacon Street.  Eddie Doyle sat at the bar while we munched on our burgers. When Hollywood was searching Boston for the perfect "Cheers," they worked with Eddie, a local bartender who coined the phrase, "sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name." He helped them pick the Bull & Finch pub as the model for the show. Eddie soon became famous with Bostonians as the guy who made Cheers what it is.  I had a quick business meeting with Andreas W. (this is why we came). Then a nice drive through Beacon Hill before we embarked up our trek along I-90 towards home.

We drove to Syracuse in the evening and stayed at the Wingate by Wyndham near I-90.  Hard to find!  Nice hotel though. Up early next morning to reach Grimsby by noon and then a meeting with LCBO managers in Brampton at 2 PM.

Boston is the most fun place on the Eastern Seaboard! It's called the City of Neighbourhoods for good reason and in the Summer the burg really comes alive with events and things to do.

My girlfriend and I love getting discount clothing and shoes at Filene's Basement. the Seafood restaurants and Irish pubs are the best too!!!

Some of the best wines are available in the liquor shops in Boston. I like it because I can purchase wines I can't get in Canada.
