Wine Notebook, Part 9 (May 7, 2007)    by the Wine Baron

Worked much of the day on introducing Dois Amigos Foch Baco red wine into new Ontario stores. This 1.5 Liter wine sells for just $11.95 plus deposit.  It's value is being recognized by most store managers and they are happy to add the wine to their portfolio.

I also wrote an article for the Bordeaux tours we are offering this summer. We are leading 3 tours, July, August and September 2007.  Here's the article. Note: the tongue-in-cheek reference to milestone birthdays and divorce references the fact that these two groups of people are 80% more likely to take a luxury tour than the general populace!  Interesting... but travelers of ALL descriptions truly are welcome.

Are You Turning 50 This Year
or Did You Just Get Divorced?

If either depiction describes you, then you’ll love this idea as a way to celebrate and treat yourself!  Well, maybe you just want to treat yourself anyway, even if you don’t meet either criteria.  A couple of well-established wine merchants are offering guided tours to Bordeaux this summer and fall.

The tours have a cool, “hands on” slant. You stay in a genuine 18th Century French Chateau.  You help trim the vines, make the wine and cook the meals with the chef.  “It’s a way to immerse yourself in the French culture of wine, food and history,” according to Hugh Sutherland who will be one of the tour leaders.  The all-inclusive tour includes not only this unique hands-on element but also plenty of free time and an amazing array of activities: side tours, wine tastings, sumptuous meals, pool, tennis, spa, and golf.  Don’t worry, you don’t have to work too hard. The overall effect is definitely one of luxury.

“Chateau Meyre in the Medoc will be your home in Bordeaux,” adds partner tour leader The Wine Baron.  “It’s in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region and is close to so many other famous appellations such as Margaux,” he added.  “It’s so relaxing to spend a couple of hours out in the vineyard or in the wine cellar helping with the winemaking process.  You learn a lot in a fun and cultural way.  The French really know how to live life to fullest enjoyment. It’s energizing and eye-opening to experience it their way.”

Bordeaux is still the ultimate wine region of the world. History, perfect soils, climate and winemaking know-how combine to make it the Holy Grail of wine.  One perfectly satisfying feature of the tour is that it is with a small intimate group of people.  No more that 14 or 15 per tour.  The 10 day guided experience can be combined with add-on days to Paris or other parts of Europe.

So, whether it’s a landmark birthday, a celebration of newfound freedom, or just because life is too short to not experience it to the fullest, this is the tour of a lifetime.  Tours are in early August and mid September 2007.
