Being
the cultural denizens that we are, we set out to find an excellent
all-around hotel in the city that dreams are made of. Hotel de
France is the embodiment of this assessment.
We look for the
following criteria in a hotel: Quality & Ambience, Level of Luxury for the
Price, Service, Services & Amenities, and Location. This hotel
meets each of these tall requirements.
It exudes a such a level of quality that even a prince would take note.
The ambience is abundant enough for the most hopeless
romantic, and the luxury would be satisfying for even J Lo. The
service is top-notch enough for Madonna. Amenities are excellent, and
location is central enough even if you were Vienna's mayor.
Hotel de France is situated on the
Ringstrasse that circles the inner city. This is a friendly and
comfortable luxury hotel. It is easily Five Star.
Part of Austria Hotels International, the hotel began a major
renovation project in 2002. This project was completed recently,
so the entire hotel currently shines in top condition. |
The renovation process not only
renewed everything, it also pared down the number of rooms from
226 to 194. This means more space in each room. 140 rooms
are non-smoking.
Types of rooms: STANDARD, BUSINESS,
MAISONETTE, and SUITE. Depending on the season, a standard room will
cost 125 to 240 Euros. A business room ranges from 140 to 280 Euros,
Maisonettes run 190 to 420 Euros and Suites go for 300 to 650
Euros. All types are spacious. No need to go on a diet before
checking in! For example, the suites are 80 to 140 square
metres; room to spread out! |

I am
greeted warmly by hotel staff at check-in. I like
the perfect blend of efficiency and friendliness in their
attitude. Possessing movie-star good looks as I do, perhaps they
mistook me for Brad Pitt? Not sure, but I really
appreciate the personal style
... not too corporate. Buffet King that I am, I appreciate
hearing that breakfast is included in the price of my stay.
I choose the Maisonette because I
love the two storey layout. Photos at left and below show the
main level and the view to the lower level from the upstairs
bedroom level. There's a convenient two piece bathroom on the upper
level.
The room is equipped with phone,
high speed Internet, wide screen TV, complimentary mini-bar,
tea/coffee and safe to store your valuables, to name a few. |
The
white robes in the main bathroom are only the beginning of the
luxurious feeling that the whole experience conveys. Everything
here is gleaming new and top-notch. I am tempted to extend my
trip so I can stay longer in this sweet place.
As I relax in the attractive
Atrium, with beer in hand and senses resonating with melodies by
the resident pianist, General Manager Hermann Krammer comes
over to show me around the hotel. Originally from Salzburg, Mr.
Krammer is swift to praise the numerous virtues of cosmopolitan
Vienna. As he shows off the many features of the facility, I
begin to understand that his professionalism and commitment ensure
utter perfection in
every facet of the hotel. |

Being more
recreational minded than corporate, I am quite drawn to the
well appointed fitness centre, boutique, restaurants and Atrium
bar. No. 3, the main restaurant, just off the reception area is
handy and the food is excellent. I'm picky and
particular, so I use superlatives sparingly, but the quality of food
here deserves the
notable observation. No. 3 is
open from 11 AM to 11 PM. An outdoor terrace, known as
Schanigarten, is a nice way to dine in summer months. Those
with a passion for the exotic can also promenade over to the Sushi bar in the same
facility. The sumptuous breakfast is served in the Bele Etage
restaurant (see photos farther down). |
For
corporate needs, there are 8 function rooms, ranging in capacity
from 20 to 150 people.
Standing in the second largest, I am
told that
it can seat 80 people (theatre style).
The bathroom is luxurious! >>>

The Atrium is
an area to sit and relax.
You will be offered
refreshments
and sustenance. Whether you
enjoy the Goulasch Soup (wow)
or a Viennese pastry, prepare
to be pleased. |

Time to
reflect over all the hotels we experienced and come to a decision.
The
experience at the Hotel de France was virtually perfect.
This is a well-run luxury hotel with personal attention to
your needs and comfort.
"I heartily recommend
Hotel de France when staying in Vienna."
