Tasting Notes  -  Columbia Crest, Merlot

If you want excellent Merlot, you will be best served going to either Washington state or France. This is one of the finest Washington Merlots for the price. The state's cool climate and well matched soil for this varietal help make this a good wine.  But the folks at Columbia Crest apply their artistry as well. This winery is noted for its soft and fruity Merlot. If you have a choice on recent vintages, go for the 1998. It has been hailed as the "vintage of the decade."

The grapes for this wine are grown in the Columbia Valley.

Look for flavors of black cherry and raspberry with hints of spice and vanilla. The 14 months of aging in oak barrels helps create a toasty flavor as well. Traditionally, Merlot displays flavors of plum, blueberries and cherries. The cherries are self-evident, but how about the other two?  What do YOU think?

Wine Spectator enjoyed the "lingering finish" and rated this wine 87 points and BEST BUY designation.
