Wine Notebook, Part 14 (May 27, 2007)    by the Wine Baron

Dining doesn't always have to be expensive to be a great experience. All you need is a place with character, excellent food, and decent prices.  In Chicago, this is very easy to do.  See yesterday for one of my fancy restaurant picks.  But I want to cover a less pricey experience today. Here are my lunch and dinner choices today. Either is great for lunch or dinner:

Taco and Burrito Palace #2, 2441 N. Halsted St., Chicago is just a few doors down from famous B.L.U.E.S. - my fave blues club. I first discovered it about 15 years ago after leaving the club at around 2 AM and finding myself hungry. I was amazed at the fantastic taste of their tacos. I still am. Today is the day to enjoy two beef tacos and refried beans.  I also enjoy the burritos. Everything here is very authentic and truly excellent in quality and flavor. Very inexpensive. Recently moved to this location and now less basic in appearance and decor. Always clean.  Google Map ThisBrowser's "Back" button to return

Portillo's has several Chicago locations. My favorite is at the corner of Clark and Ontario. This hot dog, burger and sandwich diner has a 20's and 30's gangster theme. Portillo's has the best Italian beef sandwich in Chicago. Quote me on it!  I ALWAYS have the Italian beef when I go (which is very very often). I just can't get past it, it's too damn good!!  But if I happen to go twice in one day, then I might have a couple of hot dogs. They're tops as well.  This place is also inexpensive. But the experience and food quality is simply excellent.
