Wine
Notebook, Part 19 (Wed. June 13, 2007)
by the Wine Baron
The
Baroness worked at the Toronto art gallery today. We met with Sally and
Alex Doulis for dinner after
work. They are a fascinating couple who have sailed the world and know
International wine, food, and places one must visit. Alex is a
best-selling author on offshore investing, banking
and income protection. Alex is a sought after advisor on
how to structure people's money affairs to maximize
return and protection of those assets from the taxman.
We met at Jamie
Kennedy Wine Bar on Church Street in Toronto.
PREVIOUS REFERENCE TO THE WINE BAR HERE.
The
restaurant's wine list, under the careful direction of
Jamie Drummond, is superb. There are only wonderful
wines here! The food was a mouth-watering
selection of tapas. The seafood themed appetizers
were wonderful. The small portions are brimming with
flavor and finesse and are to be savored slowly.
The wine
was a Blisss Giallo Maremma Sangiovese- Tuscany. This is a new “Super Tuscan.” Maremma is 15 K from Brunello and shares the same quality and soils. Blisss is a new winery, having produced wine for others in the past. The wine has an elegant bouquet of red fruit such as cherries, and long persistence. It's bold, big, smooth and has great body and supple tannins. Although the wine list was extensive, we wanted to match a wine to the mood and the people we were with, so we did the BYOB thing and brought this bottle from home. It's available from the Wine Baron for $198 per case.

We walked
the Doulises home in the warm summer night. Memories of
conversation about world travel, sailing the Mediterranean, and
great dining experiences fresh in mind. Hilde and I
determined that we want to be more like the Doulises. We
hope we can spend more time with them - it'll be an
inspiration.
