Peter Romano of Nickel Brook brewery and I met for lunch at Allen's in Toronto. He told me about their new organic lager beer, which he believes is the first beer in Canada to be officially certified organic. He showed me the certificate. He was dropping off some samples of the beer for Allen's owner John Maxwell, who has a very discerning palate. Peter and I were both remarking how heavy the Toronto traffic was today and we were both in the mood to settle in at this comfortable venue, eat some good food and warm up. We enjoyed a glass of Palatine Hills Gewürztraminer along with Allen's Galway Seafood Chowder and a very lovely salad. John and team always deliver great food and attentive service. Today was no exception. Allen's is John's tribute to the Irish American eateries of his native New York. The Emerald Isle's influence is firmly in place in this upscale yet down-to-earth saloon. The chowder did indeed smack of Galway, and I am told the Guinness on tap here and at Dora's next door may well be the best in Toronto. I will visit this subject in more detail soon, when I go back to Allen's to specifically investigate this rumour. Having just been to the Guinness brewery last month, I am very interested to compare! I will share my findings here. Palatine Hills
